Darth Vader at the Tennis Courts

Yep, no lie. The kid on the left looks amused. He’s probably on his cell phone telling his friends, who are saying “like, no way!” to which he replies, “WAY!!!”

Okay, here’s the story: I was sitting on my front porch minding my own, reading the morning newspaper under the shade of my shapely oak. I had a pretty busy day planned, when I came upon an article about the upcoming 16th annual Fan Expo Canada 2010, to be held at the Metro Convention Centre this weekend (Aug 27-29). To promote the weekend event they were staging a Star Wars photo op at Bell Trinity Park in Toronto’s west end. Darth Vader and his merry gang of Imperial Storm Troopers would be doing some yoga and playing some tennis this morning at the park. This is the same park that hosted last fall’s Zombie Walk. If you recall, I made it out for that, too. The last thing I had on my mind, however, was driving out to the west end for a photo opportunity — but how could I pass up shots of Darth doing Yoga! So I quickly slapped on my sunscreen and hit the road. Boy it was busy with news media. There were more of us with cameras than there were storm troopers. Obviously they have a savvy media person looking after things. All in all it was a great event and everyone had a good laugh.

If you live in and around Toronto and you’re looking for something to do this weekend, check out www.fanexpocanada.com for details. If you’re a fan or collector of sci fi, comic books, horror, gaming or Japanese Anime, this is your weekend. Some of the stars attending include William Shatner (Captain Kirk), Stan Lee (Marvel Comics), Adam West (Batman), Burt Ward (Robin), Julie Newmar (Catwoman), Leslie Neilson (Forbidden Planet, 1956), Ernest Borgnine and many more.

I’ll be posting more photos of Darth and his buddies later, so stay tuned.

Fantastic picture! The elevated position and black/white contrast work really well

Hilarious! It looks like Darth is going for a pack of cigarettes! And the storm troopers look so bored.

What made you think to hold the camera high over your head? Is that a ‘classic’ Lazy Photographer technique? The perspective works! 🙂

    • Thanks Tracy. Yeah, I often will hold the camera over my head to see what I get. Much like my hip shots, these I call my reach shots. Well, I don’t call them anything, actually, but from now on that’s what I’m gonna call them. 🙂

I like the way the one storm trooper with his gun at the ready seems to have just noticed you and your up-high camera and is wondering what you’re doing and if you are a threat, maybe forgetting for a moment that it’s all pretend.
